The Federal Crop Insurance Corporation Board of Directors approved the Shellfish pilot insurance program under section 523 of the Federal Crop Insurance Act effective for 2024 and succeeding crop years. The Risk Management Agency (RMA) published all program materials on September 29, 2023. The first sales closing date (SCD) is November 30, 2023, with the insurance period beginning January 1, 2024.

RMA has received requests to modify the 2024 crop year SCD to provide better information to producers who could benefit from the program. This program is a new plan of insurance, which requires additional effort to train agents and update approved insurance providers’ delivery systems. Additionally, this program is targeted to stakeholders who have not had prior opportunities to participate in the Federal crop insurance program. Modifying the SCD allows crop insurance agents more time to reach these stakeholders.

The SCD will be December 15, 2023, for the 2024 crop year and November 30 for the subsequent crop years.
