Crop Insured

All forage (alfalfa) seed in the county is insurable if:

  • Grown in the county;
  • A premium rate is provided by the actuarial document;
  • You have a share;
  • Grown for harvest as certified forage seed; or
  • Grown under a forage seed contract executed on or before the acreage reporting date.

Acreage dedicated to the production of hybrid seed is now insurable. Separate types for hybrid varieties are shown in the actuarial materials.

We do not insure any forage seed crop that:

  • Is not a certified forage seed crop;
  • Is not a contracted forage seed crop;
  • Is interplanted with another crop, unless otherwise specified in the special provisions;
  • Is planted into an established grass or legume;
  • Does not have an adequate stand at the beginning of the insurance period;
  • Exceeds the age limitations for a forage seed crop or type listed in the special provisions; or
  • Is utilized for any purpose during the crop year other than for seed production.
Counties Available

Idaho - Canyon, Oneida, and Owyhee counties.

Oregon - Malheur and Umatilla counties.

Washington - Grant and Walla Walla counties.

Coverage is available in other counties by written agreement if certain criteria are met. Submit requests, through your crop insurance agent, to the Spokane Regional Office by September 30.

Causes of Loss

You are protected against the following:

  • Adverse weather conditions such as hail, frost, freeze, wind, drought, and excess moisture;
  • Earthquake;
  • Failure of irrigation water supply, if caused by an insured peril during the insurance period;
  • Fire, unless weeds and undergrowth are not controlled or unmulched pruning debris is not removed;
  • Insects, but not damage due to insufficient or improper application of control measures;
  • Plant disease, but not damage due to insufficient or improper application of control measures;
  • Pollinators or insufficient supply of pollinators, if lack of pollinators or pollination is solely and directly caused by an insurable cause of loss;
  • Volcanic eruption; or
  • Wildlife, unless wildlife control measures have not been taken.

Insurance Period

Insurance coverage begins on acreage with an adequate stand on the later of the date:

  • We accept your application;
  • October 1 for fall-planted, seed-to-seed, year and established stands;
  • May 1 for spring-planted, seed-to-seed, year stands in Washington; or
  • May 15 for spring-planted, seed-to-seed, year stands in Idaho and Oregon.
Where to Buy Crop Insurance
All multi-peril crop insurance, including Catastrophic Risk Protection policies, are available from private crop insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA service centers or on the RMA website.
