Risk Management Agency Program Announcement

CROP INSURANCE DEADLINES NEAR

WASHINGTON, Sep 5, 2000 - Risk Management Agency (RMA) Administrator Ken Ackerman reminds producers that the September 30 sales closing date, which
covers a number of major fall-planted grain crops, is just around the corner.

"We've pushed hard to make the additional premium authorized by Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000 (ARPA) available to farmers planting fall crops, said Ackerman. Farmers who still find crop insurance too expensive owe it to themselves to take a look at their new options."

For 2001 crops, the premium subsidy changes are:

Premium Subsidy Changes from CY 2000 to CY 2001

Coverage Level Old Subsidy* New Subsidy**
50/100 55% 67%
55/100 46% 64%
60/100 38% 64%
65/100 42% 59%
70/100 32% 59%
75/100 24% 55%
80/100 17% 48%
85/100 13% 38%

*Applied to major crops under APH coverage plan. For revenue plans, subsidy applied to yield portion of premium only. Rates of subsidy also could differ for price elections less than 100%.

** Applies to all plans of insurance (except group risk-based policies) and all price levels within a coverage level.

Crops with September 30, 2000, Sales Closing Dates in some areas include Barley, Canola, Cultivated Wild Rice, Forage Production, Mint, Oats, Potatoes, Rye, Sugarcane, and Wheat (see table). Some counties within a state may have a different sales closing date.

Producers should contact a crop insurance agent to discuss their options. A list of agents is also available at local Farm Service Agency offices.
